New Caledonia Food & Dining

There are some fabulous places to eat in New Caledonia. Your holiday will include fine dining in some wonderful New Caledonian restaurants such as Le Bilboquet Plage, offering fine French cuisine in a tropical garden with sea views. Dining out in Noumea is a way of life, and with the perfect New Caledonian weather, al fresco dining is common.

Grab a map of New Caledonia and find Noumea, the capital. Visit the Jade Restaurant, on the Promenade R. Laroque, which has gourmet Chinese food for lunch and dinner. On the Beach restaurant has more French food and you could nearly put your feet in the water it is so close!

Of course, with so much water, there are many seafood restaurants in New Caledonia. Although it is a French colony, the variety of people living here is reflected in the variety of restaurants such as Indonesian, Chinese, Italian and Spanish. You’ll find that the Isle of Pines also has some excellent restaurants.

For some authentic South Pacific food, try a Bougna. This is a traditional Melanesian dish, combining fruit, pork, fish, chicken, vegetables and lobster all wrapped in local banana leaves and then gently cooked in coconut milk over some hot stones in the ground.

Travel New Caledonia for your holiday and taste all the great sensations – tropical local fruits, reef fish and a very interesting dish called Civet de Rousette or bat stew! You can even try ‘table d’hotes’ where you will be welcomed into local homes and served the traditional food of wild pig, crab, fish or venison.
